And today I them it into soup (yep, its still raining *sigh*). When you cook on good charcoal you really don’t want to waste a single bit of that heat. Good charcoal costs good money, but please, please invest in some good stuff and leave the supermarket stuff on the shelves. At risk of sounding like a stuck record... I would rather cook over gas than use shit charcoal. I know good stuff costs considerably more, so maybe we just choose to barbecue a little less to compensate. We can all make choices here, just like you might with buying cheap meat or battery eggs, and the benefits of good charcoal go way beyond your cooking. There are a myriad of environmental, biodiversity and socio-economic reasons why we should only be lighting the good stuff. The soup, by the way, is roast squash with pomegranate, walnuts, parsley and chilli sprinkles, drizzled with plenty of good olive oil and pomegranate molasses. Leytonstone Tesco, London Went for the prosciutto, mushroom and mascarpone from the Finest range. One thing about the oven pizza is that you can control your level of bake a bit more easily than with a restaurant number. Achieved a very acceptable level of crispiness with the fan setting on 190 degrees for approximately 15 minutes, so the technical score is inevitably decent. Tesco’s USP when it comes to pizza distribution is undoubtedly the self-styled “wood fired” approach to their dough. This blind baking technique is intended to lock in some of the smokey flavours of the flames, but the trusty tear and sniff test for smoke detection returned negative. Same can also be said about the dough character, although it’s not actually advertised as sourdough; probably a bit too controversial a flavour for the plebs. It’s not bad though to be fair, as supermarket pies go. Toppings were decent enough - Tesco claim a mushroom and Parmesan white sauce base for depth and complete it with some relatively inoffensive ham and garlic mushrooms. I don’t really get the massive dollops of the creamy cheese though - I always find this goes a bit weird and jelly-like and I kind of spread it out over the slice like butter.
